The Main Street

Picture
Butler Pike is known as the Main Street of Ambler. It was declared a turnpike in 1853 and had 2 toll gates. One was even built at Butler and Maple Avenues so that people going to the train station would have to pay. In 1888, the year the town was incorporated, the tolls were petitioned by residents. The following year Ambler was toll-free. Butler Pike was the main drag of Ambler, which included the business district, entertainment, and other important town necessities. The Ambler Theater was built in 1928, just in time for the Hollywood boom. The theater served as a prominent entertainment facility until it closed in 1997, then was reopened and restored in 2002.
